This thesis examines, on the basis of a comprehensive survey, ways of life among Toulousan detached home-owners and, in particular, those who face considerable constraints in becoming settled due to the conditions of the real estate and property market. Although the outer suburban area remains a predominantly middle class area, it is becoming socially diversified, particularly through the distribution of social acquisition. Whereas for many outer suburbans, this way of living reveals a desire to will one's own environment, for the low-income families interviewed, the acquisition and location of a detached house are far from sufficient and require an enormous effort.
